Asian American and Pacific Islander Pioneers in Travel

Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! This year we are celebrating the pioneers in travel. 

 

Katherine Sui Fun Cheung

- Katherine Sui Fun Cheung is known as "China's Amelia Earhart". She was the first licensed Asian American woman aviator in an era where only one percent of licensed American pilots were women. 1%! Katherine began taking flying lessons with the Chinese Aeronautical Association and received her pilot's license in 1932.

Arthur Chin

- Arthur Chin was the first American flying ace of World War 2. A flying ace is a military aviator credited with shooting down five or more enemy aircraft during aerial combat. 

Hazel Ying Lee

- Hazel Ying Lee was one of America's first female pilots. She was the first Chinese American woman to fly for the US Military when she joined the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP) in 1944.

Quang X. Pham

- Quang X. Pham was the first Vietnamese American to earn aviator wings in the US Marine Corps and the second Vietnamese American to complete the Marines Office Candidate School program. 

Panama Hotel

- The Panama Hotel was constructed in 1910 by Seattle's first Japanese American architect, Sabro Ozasa.
